Ecocide should be treated like a war crime, U.K. lawyer says

Ecocide: The extensive destruction, damage to or loss of ecosystem(s) of a given territory, whether by human agency or by other causes, to such an extent that peaceful enjoyment by the inhabitants of that territory has been severely diminished.

Tonight — when those of us in the developed world are to turn off the lights to mark Earth Hour — two Alberta oilsands company executives will be sentenced for their roles in the destruction of nature.

They were convicted of ecocide last Sept. 30, during a live-streamed trial by jury in the U.K. Supreme Court.
