Exclusion of Romani people

Millions of Roma continue to be enraged by the exclusion of Romani people from the conferences, discussions, academia, policies, media, and everywhere else that provides opportunities for non-Roma to talk about us, represent us, decide for us, and ultimately exclude us.

We have made very little progress in improving our communities in Europe because we have not been included in the decision making process - the so-called Decade of Roma Inclusion has been a failure.

We Rromani people deserve to have a voice in policies that concern us.

Zeljko Jovanovic on racism against Roma and what Roma want

On Oct. 19, police in Greece conducted a raid on a local Roma community. There, officers spotted a little blond-haired, blue-eyed girl named Maria. Fearing she had been abducted (Maria bore no resemblance to the darker-skinned man and woman claiming to be her parents), police removed the girl from the home. DNA tests revealed that Maria was not related to her alleged parents. Within hours, news outlets across the continent were publishing reams stories on alleged “gypsy” child-snatchers.

Myth: While it is hard for Roma people in Europe, “the Refugee Convention is not there to protect people if they are having a tough time at home”. They do not reach the level of Convention refugees.

How to reduce discrimination: Getting to know the Roma

A troubling scandal unfolded in Europe last week. Normally, most people wouldn’t blink an eye upon seeing an ethnically mixed family. When it comes to the Roma (commonly known by the disfavored term “Gypsies”), however, many Europeans do notice. Three blond-haired and blue-eyed children were thus taken into custody from otherwise darker skinned Romani families, one in Greece (see photo above) and two in Ireland, on the suspicion of having been kidnapped.
