Childhood hunger is a Canadian public health crisis

When a crow went down with West Nile virus somewhere in Ontario, my phone would ring. Practising as an infectious disease specialist at the time, I was alerted to early warnings about threats to the public’s health from infectious agents. Immediate response was expected – and provided – by our strong public health infrastructure.

But here at the children’s hospital where I now work, a group of us meet regularly, if informally, about another pressing public health threat – hunger.

Doctors stage sit-in over refugee health care cuts

About 80 doctors staged a sit-in at the Toronto office of federal cabinet minister Joe Oliver Friday, with the activists demanding to meet with the minister to raise concerns about changes to health care for refugees and refugee claimants.

"I just cannot understand how my government can take the most vulnerable of people and decide it's appropriate to make them more vulnerable," said Dr. Paul Caulford, a Scarborough, Ont., family physician, who has worked with immigrants and refugees for decades.

Federal bureaucrats pose as new citizens on Sun News

Six federal bureaucrats were drafted to pose as new Canadians for a citizenship reaffirmation ceremony broadcast on the Sun News network, an event requested by Immigration Minister Jason Kenney's office.

The bureaucrats smiled and held Canadian flags as the TV hosts referred to a group of 10 people as "new Canadians" that had "finally" received their citizenship.

FLAWED CPCCA REPORT PUSHES BAN ON CRITICISM OF ISRAEL

On July 7, after a long delay, the so-called "Canadian Parliamentary Coalition to Combat Antisemitism" (CPCCA) released the report of its inquiry. Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) has issued a detailed critique of "grave misrepresentations" by the CPCCA, which includes Conservative, Liberal and NDP MPs, but is not an official Parliamentary group.
